4 Tips to Winterize Your Pipes
4 Tips to Winterize Your Pipes

Is your home prepared for a freezing New England winter? Winterizing your home before the temperatures really start dropping is the best way to save yourself big headaches and even bigger costs. Here at N&J Plumbing, we want to help make sure your home is ready for even the coldest weather on its way. Here are 4 tips to winterizing the pipes in your New Britain, CT home.
Insulation
While you're sitting nice and cozy in your home, your pipes might not be so lucky. Poorly insulated pipes in the walls, attic, and basement are prime freeze points. Making sure your pipes are properly wrapped will help keep them from freezing. Make sure there are no gaps in the insulation, and if you have a room above your garage, make sure to keep that garage door closed!
Add Heat and Reduce Pressure
It's a no-brainer to keep the heat going when you're at home and snuggled up cozy on the couch. But, if you're traveling and leaving your home all alone, make sure you leave the heat on. Keeping a home above 55 °F (12.78 °C) will reduce the likelihood of coming home to a burst pipe.
Opening the cabinet doors under faucet cabinets along the exterior walls of your home will allow more heat to reach your pipes. These faucets should also be set to a slow drip during those deep freezes. This will allow pressure to escape, so that even if a pipe does freeze, the pressure will have somewhere to go. This is no guarantee, but it can help.
Keep the Outside, Outside
This one might seem more obvious than the rest, but if you haven't done a close inspection of your exterior recently, we recommend taking a look before the cold really sets in. Fill any cracks or holes in your home's exterior walls and foundation with spray foam insulation. Or, use caulking to help keep that cold air from getting inside. If you have a ventilated crawlspace, seal the vents with heavy-duty cardboard to reduce the cold air under your home.
Don't Forget the Hose!
Let's face it, you aren't going to need your hose for a while. Be sure to disconnect and drain your garden hose and sprinkler system. If there is a separate shutoff for the external faucets, go ahead and shut them off and cover the hose bibs with insulation.
